Defensively, the short and intermediate passing routes is my downfall. I field the run exceptionally well. The long passes are almost always tipped or intercepted. What coverage is best for fielding the shorter routes?

Try a Cover 2 but make sure you roam the deep middle of the field.

Yeah, Cover 2 sink is really great against short and intermediate routes. Make sure you have fast safeties because they'll have to cover a lot of space in the deep.
You can also put a LB or a DL in QB spy, it can help against drags and slants from the slot because, in many situations, the guy is likely to throw the ball in front of him on those routes, giving you the chance to make a quick tackle.

Re: How to Cease the Short and Itermediate Passing Routes
Basically, you have to pack the underneath areas with defenders. Sadly, that gives up the deep ball OR gives the QB years to throw.
I'd run my normal defense, but I'd toss in a spy or hook zone to give the offense something to think about. The more plays the offense runs, the more chances to make a mistake. But I'd stick with the defenses that don't give up big plays. Later |
