Curl Routes

Everyone knows Curls were the route of choice for many people in Madden 09. It seems EA decided to intentioanlly limit their effectiveness this year, though.

Here's my question for everyone: how do you like to throw curl routes against man coverage (if you throw them at all)? Do you pass lead up or down? Do you ever successfully hit them against press man coverage without getting picked off consistently? I'm interested in what everyone does, and if they have success. I've had to basically remove most of the curl flat concepts from my offense because man press seems to crap all over them.

Re: Curl Routes

you don't ... there's 10 million ways a person can beat man and this is somewhere between 9-10 million on the to do list ...

just have other routes to look for vs man d within your plays that have curls

Re: Curl Routes

I am with commander on this. If I have Curl/flat called I am checking out of it immediately
UNLESS... I am running the one from gun that features the ANGLE route by the back. In this case different story, I will hit SPROLES who is matched up one on one with the backer ALL DAY!

Re: Curl Routes

Thanks everyone. I pretty much thought this would be the case. I just hate having to mothball my curl/flat/post combo (Gun and Ace Y-Trips). It was one of my favorite plays in Madden 09, but I feel like I can't really use it without an effective man to man beater. I feel like the slot post just isn't reliable enough in that regard.

Re: Curl Routes

Yeah I hate the way EA decided to ruin the curl, I mean, it is nearly impossible to call it against man coverage without getting it picked off.

Re: Curl Routes

Yeawell they did that becausein real life curls are not great at all. In real football, you beatman with slants and drags and posts, etc. Plays where your reciever makes a quick move to gain seperation from their defender. Curl routes are very effective vs zones this year, as they usually find asoft spot in between the defenders. I like the curl flat vs zone all day this year especially with a rollout, the flat is open,if you dont rollout the defender follows the flat which opens up the curl. If their both covered i always have a streak or fade somewhere and ijust rocket, its very simple.

Re: Curl Routes

Actually Curls are one of the most common routes in all of football. And they definitely work against non press man coverage. When a receiver sees press pre snap, he will often convert his route to a fade or go. The problem in Madden is that you can show press in a Cover 3 defense, yet see the corner magically back peddle fast enough to not get beat deep. Anytime a corner is in a press position (man or Cover 3 zone) the receiver should have a decent chance of running past him and making a big play. That's just not accurately represented in Madden. It sucks.

actually real life man beating "curls" are actually more like comeback routes from madden .. they dont just stop and turn around they come back to it .... thus the same way on madden comebacks work against man better than curls

Very true...some deep comebacks can be good against someone trying to play man fag D on you.

About the thread bnr man should stop a curl 9/10 times lol....no one wants curls to be back to how they were last year. Certain curls this year are still really effective against zone. There about where they should be IMO. You can even hit them on non bnr man if you time it right.

Re: Curl Routes

You guys are definitely right about curls against press man. The thing is, in real life, your route will automatically convert to a fade/go when you see this. In Madden you would have to this manually.

Temas definitely run straight curls against regualr man, though. The idea is to sell a vertical route (obviously) and then stick your foot hard in the ground and get the ball. The Eagles did this with Desean a few times last year. Teams were so worried about him getting deep that they played off-man, and he would simply curl (not comeback) and catch the ball.
